Step 1 – Concrete Floor Construction

The first process of underfloor heating installation is construction of a good solid substrate or concrete slab. Most commonly it’s made from one pour of concrete either via a concrete transfer pump or straight from the concrete mixer. It’s crucial to get this slab level as it will make the installation of other materials on top the same depth, and you will achieve uniform drying.

Pro Screed deal with all the major concrete suppliers to provide the right strength concrete for your substrate. Placed either by the use of our concrete pump or concrete mixer we can achieve a level finish to ease the build up of insulation, underfloor heating pipes and floor levelling compound, eliminating uneven floors throughout your property.

Step 2 – Floor Insulation

The second and most important part of the floor construction process is the laying of insulation on your substrate, this should sit evenly without rocking and be tightly packed according to building regs. Where underfloor heating & liquid screeds are used, a slip membrane needs to be applied, a minimum of 500 gauge (125 mu), lapped up the walls by 150mm and taped securely to create a pond like effect which is water tight to stop any liquid screed escaping and getting underneath your insulation, if the screed does get under the insulation then it will all start to float.

A perimeter edging strip should be applied where underfloor heating is in place to allow for any expansion through the warmed screed.

Step 3 – Underfloor Heating – UFH

For years, underfloor heating installations had not really been popular in the UK and had been an expensive addition to any home. Gradually it started to get used more in the UK, driving the cost down significantly and now is virtually the same price as installing radiators – but has a better heating efficiency and has reduced or no cold spots.

Pro Screed deal with various Underfloor heating suppliers to provide our customers with a underfloor heating system that suits their needs. Whether a single zone 2 port manifold or a top spec multi manifold system, all underfloor heating kits are installed by us and primed by our underfloor heating system engineers.

Step 4 – Floor Screed

Liquid screeds are the perfect answer to a level floor finish, when used in conjunction with underfloor heating systems the liquid screed will be pumped over the underfloor heating pipes to fully encapsulate them leaving no air pockets. With the liquid screed being a gypsum based eco friendly product, it will heat up very quickly and retain the heat longer reducing heating costs. A minimum depth of 50mm should be applied and no more than 70-75mm, where there is no underfloor heating the depth of screed can be as little as 30mm with a slip membrane underneath or 25mm where a liquid membrane has been applied allowing the screed to bond to the substrate.

Pro Screed work alongside various screed manufacturers throughout the UK and will always try to work with the closest plant to the work site, reducing travelling times and workability with the product.

Step 5 – Thin Section & Screed Repairs

Thin section screeds are normally used to level up a floor without losing too much height, these can be where a concrete base is not level, to flatten off a rough or tamped concrete floor or to level up an old existing floor instead of taking that floor out. The thin section liquid screeds range from 0-50mm and can be ready for foot traffic within 2 hours. Repair screeds are a cheaper and quicker solution to cracked or broken concrete or screed floors, it’s more like a patch over the damaged area, however this is a short term solution and it is always advisable to ideally have a new slab poured all at once.

Pro Screed use different methods and products depending on each scenario, all thin section and repair screeds are hand mixed and applied with spiked rollers to aid the levelling process.
